Some of the best custom projects start with a simple idea and a little creativity. One of my recent projects at Clocktower Creations is a great example of how laser engraving can transform an everyday item into something deeply personal and meaningful.

A client reached out wanting to create a welcoming sign for his mother-in-law’s new place. The goal was simple but heartfelt, a sign that read “Sally’s Room.” Instead of starting with a traditional sign blank, we explored a more creative option that would add warmth and character to the space.

The final result was a beautiful, heart-shaped wooden cutting board turned into a custom hanging sign that feels personal, thoughtful, and unique.

Finding the Perfect Base for a Custom Sign

When clients are open to creative suggestions, the possibilities expand quickly. In this case, I recommended checking stores like HomeGoods or T.J. Maxx for wooden items that could double as a sign base. These stores often carry well-made wooden boards with unique shapes and finishes that work perfectly for engraving.

The client found exactly what we were hoping for, a heart-shaped wooden cutting board that already had a metal handle across the top. That metal handle became an ideal built-in hanging solution, eliminating the need to add extra hardware and keeping the design clean and simple.

Using a cutting board as a sign base is a great example of repurposing decor in a way that feels intentional rather than improvised.

Designing a Sign That Feels Warm and Personal

With the base selected, the focus shifted to design. The main text, “Sally’s Room,” was engraved prominently, ensuring it was easy to read and balanced within the heart shape. To add an extra decorative element without overpowering the text, I engraved a rose design to the left of the lettering.

That small detail made a big difference. The rose added visual interest, softened the overall look, and reinforced the welcoming, homey feel the client was going for. Laser engraving allows for this level of detail and control, making it easy to combine text and artwork seamlessly.

Most importantly, the client was very pleased with the result and excited to gift it as a warm welcome.
