Personalized gifts continue to grow in popularity, especially when they involve pets. A recent project at Clocktower Creations was a perfect example of how these two approaches can work together. The goal was to create a custom slate coaster set as a birthday gift, centered around a beloved dog.

From Photo to Engraving-Ready Artwork

The process started with a photo of the dog. Using AI tools, I generated line drawing versions of the image. This step is important because laser engraving works best with clean, high-contrast artwork rather than full-color photos.

By converting the photo into line art, I was able to create designs that would engrave clearly onto the slate surface while still capturing the personality of the dog.

To add another layer of creativity, I used AI to come up with a fun, fitting phrase:

“Life is Good with a Doodle.”

This tied everything together and gave the coaster set both visual and emotional appeal.

Designing a Balanced Coaster Set

Since the set included four slate coasters, I split the design into two styles:

• Two coasters with the engraved saying
• Two coasters featuring different line drawing versions of the dog

This approach created variety within the set while still keeping everything cohesive. Instead of repeating the same design four times, each coaster offered something slightly different, making the set feel more dynamic and thoughtful.

This type of design strategy works especially well for gift sets, allowing multiple elements to come together into a single theme.

Why Slate Works So Well for Engraving

Slate is one of the best materials for laser engraving because of the natural contrast it creates. When engraved, the laser removes the dark surface layer, revealing a lighter gray underneath.

This produces:

• Strong contrast for text and images
• A natural, rustic look
• Clean, detailed engraving results

For this project, the line drawings and text stood out clearly against the dark slate background, making the designs easy to see while still maintaining a refined look.

Slate also has a slightly textured surface, which adds character to each piece and ensures no two coasters look exactly the same.

Custom pet-themed gifts are always meaningful, but combining multiple elements like artwork, text, and different designs makes them even more special.

This coaster set worked well because it:

• Captured the likeness of the dog through line drawings
• Included a fun, personalized phrase
• Offered variety across the set
• Used a durable, high-quality material

Whether used daily or displayed, the coasters serve as a reminder of a beloved pet and the thoughtfulness behind the gift.
