Travel has a way of creating memories that last a lifetime. One accessory that often gets overlooked is the luggage tag.

Recently, I had the opportunity to create a set of eight custom engraved aluminum luggage tags for a returning customer. Having previously engraved custom tumblers as gifts for their sibling, they reached out again with a completely new project. It’s always rewarding when someone trusts me with another meaningful project, and this one was especially fun because we were able to build the design completely from the ground up.

Returning Customers Are the Highest Compliment

As a small business owner, nothing means more than hearing from a customer who enjoyed a previous project enough to come back.

In this case, the customer already had a vision for personalized luggage tags but needed help finding the right materials and developing the design.

Together, we created something that was both practical and personal.

Starting with the Right Material

Unlike many engraving projects where customers provide the item themselves, this project required sourcing the luggage tags first.

After discussing color options, I located purple aluminum luggage tag blanks that matched the customer’s vision. Aluminum is an excellent material for luggage tags because it offers several advantages:

• Lightweight for travel
• Durable enough for everyday use
• Corrosion resistant
• High contrast when laser engraved
• Professional appearance

Choosing the right blank is just as important as the engraving itself because it helps determine the final look of the finished product.

Designing Both Sides

One of my favorite parts of this project was collaborating on the artwork.

Rather than simply engraving a name on one side, we designed both the front and back of each luggage tag. This allowed us to maximize the available space while creating something that looked balanced and intentional.
